Child safe after South Side carjacking

June 23, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The boy was in the back seat of his mother's car when it was stolen.

The suspect took the car at gunpoint at 71st and Calumet. It was found in an alley in the 500 block of East 70th Street. The child was taken to Comer Children's Hospital to be examined. The baby was not harmed. He was able to leave in his mother's arms a short time later.

"They just basically took the money and kicked us out and drove off with the car," said 21-year-old Angela Moffett, mother. "I just thank God that he actually brought me back with my son."

She sobbed as she gave police a description of the car and baby, Jeremiah.

"I just want my baby. That's all I want. That's all I want is my baby," she said before Jeremiah was found.

Moffett said she had just finished work at Old Country Buffet, picked up her baby and stopped near 71st and Calumet when the two men robbed her and sped off in the car at 4:30 a.m. Two hours after the carjacking, police found the vehicle, which had been abandoned next to an empty lot, and the baby about five blocks away. The car radio had been taken.

"The car's stripped. But at the end of the day, material things don't count . A person's life is what's important, my son's life...I couldn't get back if something happened to him. Anything else doesn't matter," said Moffett.

Police believe the carjackers abandoned the car when they realized there was a baby in the back seat. No one is in custody.
