Gastric bypass may help cure diabetes

Eight out of 10 patients could stop taking their diabetes medications following a gastric bypass operation. That's the finding of a new review of earlier studies published in the Archives of Surgery.

Scientists combed through the data of nine studies of diabetics who had either gastric bypass or gastric banding.

Among diabetics who had gastric bypass, considered the gold standard weight loss surgery, 83 percent wound up free of diabetes medications, some within days of the procedure. That number was 62 percent for patients who had gastric banding.

Experts say about 90 percent of diabetes cases are due to excessive weight.
