Walmart announces grant to fund charities helping Chicago kids

June 23, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The retail giant announced $1.8 million in grants Thursday that will help provide meals as well as learning and employment services for students while they are on summer vacation.

Walmart executives say it is especially important to provide these services to children whose families are facing tough economic times.

"Our commitment today is a vital lifeline to many local summer programs during this time of continued fiscal restraint," said Walmart's senior vice president Julie Murphy.

The funding will go to several agencies, including Catholic Charities, the Chicago Park District and the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago.
