According to Illinois State Police, the accident took place around 11 a.m. on I-290, just west of Route 83.
The 33-year-old man was attempting to pass on the left shoulder when he struck an IDOT arrow truck and an IDOT vacuum truck. Police said he was extricated from his vehicle and airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
One of the IDOT workers involved in the crash was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other was treated at the scene, police said.
The crash caused major delays in the westbound lanes of I-290.
