Feds urge new fire safety policies in Chicago

June 29, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Chris Wheatley died August 9th when he fell 53 feet from a fire escape while battling a fire at a West Loop restaurant.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health says Wheatley's life could have been saved but for a few tweaks or additions to the department's policy.

Officials recommend creating standard rules regarding the use of fire escapes and review safety policies, especially for crews carrying heavy equipment.
