The government is investigating complaints that hybrid and electric cars may be dangerous to pedestrians because they are too quiet.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into regulations to protect pedestrians, including the visually impaired as well as people on bicycles, from being hit by hybrid and electric cars. The agency may require carmakers to add sounds that alert people when the vehicles are operating in certain low-speed maneuvers.
