Visitation held for teen killed in Ind. beach fight

July 8, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The visitation for 17-year-old Kevin Kennelly is at Mount Carmel High School. He would have been a junior.

Police say the suspect, James Malecek, 19, punched Kennelly once in the head causing the injury that led to his death.

It does not appear Malecek and Kennelly knew each other but the two had similar backgrounds. They were close in age, both played sports and went to Catholic schools. Malecek attended Loyola Academy. Both families have been described as devout and respected with homes both in Chicago and Long Beach, Ind.

"Two kids obviously raised by loving parents," said Tom Burke, a close friend of the Kennellys. "I only know one party, but I wouldn't be surprised if at some point in the future that their lives may have crossed and perhaps a bond would have struck."

Malecek is charged with involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery. He was released after posting $25,000 bond.

Funeral services for Kennelly were set for Saturday.
