Nearly 1,000 civil unions in Cook Co. so far

July 18, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Those applying for civil unions have ranged in age from 18 to 93 and have included some, but not many, opposite-sex couples.

The majority of the couples have been women.

About $36,000 in new revenues have been collected from fees associated with the licenses.

While civil unions do not afford all of the rights of marriage, they provide a wealth of protections under state law.
