Rock Island Train 420 was inbound when it struck the car at the crossing grade near Central and 167th in southwest suburban Oak Forest around 4 p.m. At least one of the train's cars came off the tracks.
Officials have not released details about the crash, but several agencies responded to the crash and at least three people were placed in ambulances. At least one person has died, according to Oak Forest police.
No train passengers appear to have been injured, Metra officials said.
"I do not have a specific number at this time. Our personnel, some are at the scene and some are en route to the scene," Metra spokesperson Meg Riley said.
Cooling buses were sent to the scene to take care of the 89 passengers onboard the train.
