Metra asks riders: Fare hikes or service cuts?

Metra is asking its riders how they would prefer the rail service fill its $100 million budget hole, by cutting service or raising fares.

Executives met with state officials in downtown Chicago to discuss the agency's finances.

The rail service has added a survey to its website, asking customers which option they prefer.

The Regional Transportation Authority says many participants polled say they would prefer to see improved service even if that means higher rates.

Metra says, before finalizing the 2012 budget, it will hold public hearings that will detail the final service options the board will be asked to consider for approval.
