Report says hospitals not encouraging breastfeeding

US hospitals are not doing enough to encourage mothers to breast feed their newborns, which raises the risk of childhood obesity, diabetes and other conditions.

A report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that in nearly 80 percent of hospitals, healthy babies who are being breast fed are also given formula when there is no medical need for it.

This makes it more difficult to breast feed at home, according to this report.

The report also criticizes hospitals for not rooming moms and babies together for 24 hours a day, and not providing adequate support for mothers once they leave.
