Burke guards cost city $600,000 last year

The city paid Chicago Alderman Ed Burke's police bodyguard detail $600,000 last year.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that figure based on documents obtained through the mayor's office.

Ald. Burke was given the detail following the 1980s council wars after he received threats for leading the opposition against the late Mayor Harold Washington.

Mayor Emanuel has been looking for areas to save the city money. Last month, he said he'll reduce the size of his detail and staff it with less expensive, retired officers.
