Study: Smokers believe vitamins will reduce cancer risk

Smokers who take a multivitamin pill may mistakenly think it's safe for them to light up more frequently because the supplement protects them from the negative effects of cigarettes.

Researchers have learned that some smokers believe the vitamins will reduce their risk of cancer. As a result, taking vitamins inspires many of them to smoke cigarettes more often.

The author of the study suggests reminding health-conscious smokers that multivitamins don't prevent cancer to help them control their smoking or even convince them to quit.

The study appears in the online journal Addiction.
