Study: Packed lunches may cause foodborne illness

A new study shows that most school lunches from home are not stored at the proper temperature and could cause foodborne illness.

Researchers at the University of Texas tested 700 packed lunches at a daycare center. Findings show as many as 90 percent of lunches reached unsafe temperatures, even when placed in a heated thermal container or in a bag with ice packs.

Experts recommend freezing beverages like water or milk, which will act as an additional ice pack to keep foods colder. They should thaw by lunch time.
