Chicago could get rapid transit buses, lanes

August 17, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The Sun-Times says the Metropolitan Planning Council wants as many as 10 new "bus rapid transit" routes.

The buses would share a lane of traffic with CTA buses, stopping once every 4-blocks.

The plan calls for the new buses to be equipped with transponders that turn traffic lights green to speed up trips.

The non-profit group says the cost could be covered partly by federal grants.

The CTA is studying the proposed new routes, but plans are not yet finalized.
