Chatsworth double-murder suspect arrested

ENCINO, LOS ANGELES

Authorities said they cornered the suspect on the roof of a building. Police shot him in the hip before he was taken into custody. His condition was unknown.

Several blocks near Ventura Boulevard and Hayvenhurst Avenue were on lockdown through the night after the suspect allegedly fired at officers who had him under surveillance. No officers were injured.

The search began at about 9:45 p.m. Sunday, and several businesses in the area were locked down as a result.

Police were searching for 43-year-old Brent D. Zubek in connection with a double homicide in Chatsworth. Two bodies were found in trash bins at a home on the 20000 block of Lassen Street Aug. 13. Police named Zubek as a suspect early on in the investigation but never revealed his connection to the two victims.

A $75,000 reward has been offered in the case.

"We've been looking for him for a week now, and we're just fortunate to have located him. We're thankful that he's in custody and that no members of the public has been injured and our officers are OK," said LAPD Detective Gus Villanueva. "The case will move forward. Now he's looking at another charge now of possibly attempted murder on a police officer."

In a bizarre twist in the investigation, the home where those bodies were found in Chatsworth caught on fire early Monday morning. The circumstances behind that fire were under investigation.
