Researchers at Mott Children's Hospital in Michigan set out to determine how degree and length of obesity factored into the onset of type 2 diabetes. They studied more than 8,000 people between the ages of 14 and 21 for 25 years. More than 300 participants developed diabetes.
Researchers noted that as time went by those who were already overweight packed on even more extra pounds. And, the longer they carried that extra weight, the more likely they were to be diagnosed with diabetes.
The study is published online in the journal Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
