CPS: 95-percent attendance for 1st day of school

September 8, 2011 (CHICAGO)

Attendance was nearly 95 percent on Tuesday, which is up from almost 93 percent last year.

School officials credited an aggressive campaign to build awareness among parents and students about attendance on the first day of classes on Tuesday. The campaign included phone banks, robo-calls to students' homes from celebrities and Google and Facebook ads.

Approximately 405,000 students attend more than 675 Chicago schools.
