Chicago became the first city in the country to ban the sale of crib bumper pads Thursday.

Wednesday, the ordinance passed a joint health and consumer protection committee meeting despite opposition from industry representatives. The full City Council approved the ordinance Thursday.

Numerous investigations have found that crib bumpers may be linked to infant suffocation deaths.

Bumper pads, which wrap around the inside of a crib and tie to crib slats, are often sold as part of coordinated bedding sets.
