Durbin, Kirk seek details on Metra fare hikes

Both of Illinois' U.S. senators say they are not pleased with Metra's proposal to increase fares.

The transit agency wants to raise fares by as much as 30 percent to cover a nearly $65 million shortfall.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin and Republican Sen. Mark Kirk have both written a letter to Metra CEO Alex Clifford asking for details about the fare hike.

A Metra spokeswoman says Clifford is preparing a full response to the senators.
