Two back-to-school events drew prominent African Americans to schools in Chicago and around the country Friday.

Rapper and actor Common took part in the Historymakers program at Corliss High School on the South Side. The theme of the day is "commit."

Common says education has been the foundation for his success and he performed for students.

Also as part of the Historymakers program, Emmy award-winning actress Marla Gibbs went back to her high school, Wendell Phillips. She told students they have the opportunity and obligation to get a good education.
