Union says layoffs hit black teachers hardest

September 23, 2011

An analysis released by the union today finds that although African- Americans make up 30 percent of teachers, 43 percent of those who recently lost their jobs are black.

"What is occuring is the most vulnerable students are seeing that their teachers are being fired at a rapid pace and it's severing the knowledge, the capability and the relationships that those teachers have with those children,"said Jackson Potter, of the Chicago Teachers Union.

A spokesperson for CPS said it "continues to remain a diverse workforce". CPS disputes the union's numbers.
