The crash took place around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. Witnesses told police the driver hit 43-year-old Beverly Akerson while she was crossing the street at North Sheridan Road and Lawrence Avenue.
Witnesses told police that after the car struck Akerson, the driver backed up and struck her again before fleeing the scene.
Akerson was taken to an area hospital where she died eight hours later.
