Police shoot man on South Side

October 2, 2011 (CHICAGO)

The incident happened at approximately 11 p.m. near 63rd Street and Eberhart.

Police say they approached a group of people to conduct an interview when a man ran away with his hand in his waistband. After a chase, police say the man refused to remove his hand from his waistband. A police spokesman says an officer feared for his own safety and shot the man.

The man was rushed to a hospital. His identity and condition had not been released early Sunday.

The Independent Police Review Authority says it is investigating.
