Another reason pregnant women should take folic acid

Folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy are being linked to a decreased risk of having a child with a severe language delay. Folic acid supplements are already recommended in pregnancy to help prevent major birth defects.

Researchers don't know exactly how folic acid might help prevent language delay but it may be due to the nutrient's effect on the nervous system.
