The village board of trustees voted to remove the Blase Plaza sign outside village hall despite many residents urging the board to keep it up.
The former Niles mayor served a year in prison on a federal conviction for an insurance company kickback scheme.
Many longtime Niles residents have said that Blase did his time in prison and should continue to be honored for the many things he did for the village.
Village officials note there are several other places in Niles that recognize Blase's accomplishments.
