Delays after vehicle hits South Shore train near Hammond

No people who were on the train have been reported injured, but three people who were in the vehicle were injured, according to officials. Those injuries are believed to not be life-threatening.

Trains in both directions are stopped near the scene. As of about 6:45 p.m., six trains headed east from Chicago to Gary were reportedly stopped behind the crash site.

Early reports Thursday evening indicated that the vehicle struck the passing train at the Brunswick crossing and became wedged underneath it.

As of about 6:45 p.m., the vehicle was still wedged on the track, and workers were using two cranes to try and dislodge the car without damaging tracks.

Officials were slowly moving trains through the area surrounding the crash scene on alternate tracks.
