The incident reportedly happened Monday at Metcalfe Elementary Community Academy on South Normal.
Board of education officials say they learned Tuesday that a student brought a BB gun to school and passed it around to other students before school started.
Some parents say they were not notified of the incident when it happened.
A Chicago Public Schools spokesperson issued a statement saying weapons of any kind are not tolerated on school grounds and school officials notified police.
