The Evanston City Council may vote to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Several aldermen have already indicated they favor the measure.

Current local law could result in a 6-month jail term for possession of up to 10 grams of pot.

Under the proposed ordinance, there would be a ticket and fine but no jail time.

A similar ordinance has been introduced in the Chicago City Council but has not been passed.
