The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) says there has been decline in those deaths from 2006 through 2010.
In 2006, there were 446 deaths related to impaired driving on Illinois roadways. By 2010, 298 deaths were reported in crashes involving alcohol.
IDOT says drivers should expect tough enforcement of drunk-driving laws during the holidays.
More than 200 law enforcement agencies will join Illinois State Police in conducting hundreds of safety checks on the roads.
