Study: Premature girls more likely to survive than boys

December 23, 2011

A new study involving more than 2,500 babies born in or before the 28th week of pregnancy showed girls to be 4 percent more likely to survive than boys. The study also showed boys were 8 percent more likely to exhibit what researchers called functional disabilities like blindness or deafness.

Researchers say there may be chromosome differences at work as well as different male and female neurological responses to injury. Their findings appear in the journal Pediatrics.
