With that in mind, the American Lung Association says people should pick a day to begin the quitting effort that won't likely be stressful or involve social situations that invite opportunities to smoke.

Quitters should also have helpful medications at the ready, and combine a new exercise routine with the effort to quit, along with a support group of friends, family, or co-workers.
