Americans were expected to spend $3.4 billion on Christmas trees this year. That's the largest amount since the recession hit in 2008.

Now that the holidays are over, if you are among those who have a real pine, it's time to dispose of the dying plant.

The McHenry County Department of Health is offering a "green" solution. The county has launched its free Christmas tree recycling program.

Dropped off trees will be sent through a wood chipper and turned into mulch. The county is accepting trees, ornament free, from now until January 31.
