The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District has awarded the Chicago Police Department a 39-year lease for land on the Far South Side that would be converted into an outdoor shooting range.

The land is located along the Calumet River near 134th Street.

Conservationists oppose the move because the site is across the river from the Hegewisch Marsh, which is home to migratory birds.

The police department will pay $10 a year for the land.
