Authorities say a northeastern Indiana man died after the tractor-mower he was riding hit a stump and he was thrown under the machine.

The Journal Gazette reports the 55-year-old man died Tuesday afternoon in Kendallville about 25 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.

Kendallville police said the man was clearing a field with a large tractor and Bush Hog-style mower when he hit a large tree stump and was thrown from the machine, which then ran over him.

The man was dead from apparent injuries when emergency responders arrived. His name has not been released by authorities.

Police said the man was unfamiliar with the field and had planned to farm the land in the spring.
