Tolls go up, traffic goes down

Higher prices may be keeping drivers off Illinois tollways.

Traffic is down during the first week of the toll increase. Compared with the same week last year, tollway use fell four and a half percent, according to the Illinois Toll Highway Authority.

The agency estimates a nearly 6-percent drop this year due to higher tolls. The basic I-PASS toll jumped from 40 to 75 cents and cash rates remain double the I-PASS tolls as they were in the past.
