Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent.

Ashes were distributed Wednesday morning at Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral.

They are a sign of the need for penance and spiritual renewal through prayer, fasting, and good work that begins the 6 week Lenten period which ends on Easter Sunday.

Also, some parishioners from Saint Teresa of Avila church were outside the CTA's Brown Line Armitage station distributing ashes to commuters heading to work.
