Metal hips may expose patients to toxins

British health regulators are asking people with metal hip implants to undergo regular monitoring.

These hip implants were widely used in the US for a period of time.

A specific type of all-metal, artificial hip may be exposing patients to a dangerously high level of toxins.

Those toxins could be seeping into their blood stream.

The British Medical Journal Investigation found that chromium and cobalt ions from this type of artificial hip can destroy muscle and bone, and spread to the lymph nodes, liver and kidneys.

Experts say this could affect millions of people in the US who received these all-metal hip devices over the last decade.

The use of these devices has since plummeted over the years because of high failure rates.
