Face transplant more extensive than others

Doctors at the University of Maryland performed a successful full face transplant last week. Richard Norris, injured in a gun accident 15 years ago, wore a mask every time he went out since the incident.

The operation was more extensive than the other 22 face transplants previously performed around the world because of the way Norris's scars are concealed and his teeth line up. It involved more than 150 doctors, nurses and other staff.

Norris is still in the hospital recovering from what doctors' say is likely to have been his last major operation. The surgery was possible because of a grant from the Office of Naval Research.
