FDA warns of side effects from bone-building drugs

May 11, 2012

In a new study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Food and Drug Administration repeated previous concerns about serious side effects from the drugs like Fosamax, Actonel and Reclast.

The agency said women without osteoporosis seem to get few to no benefits to their bones from taking those drugs beyond five years.

The FDA suggested in light of the possible side effects, some patients should be able to safely stop taking the drugs after that time, especially if they are younger and at a low risk of fractures.
