Shark fin ban awaits governor's decision

Illinois may soon have a law banning the possession of shark fin, a pricey delicacy used to make soup.

Shark fin is considered a status symbol, but environmentalists say that harvesting fins is inhumane and a threat to shark populations.

Although shark fins are not harvested in Illinois, lawmakers say Chicago's Chinatown is a hub for the sale and consumption of shark fin in the Midwest.

The state Senate approved the ban Tuesday. The bill now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn.
