Supplements linked to liver damage?

May 22, 2012

This is significant since 40 percent of the U.S. population is estimated to take herbal and dietary supplements.

A study funded by the U.S. Drug Induced Liver Injury Network looked at 109 cases of liver damage. All reported using supplements for body building and weight loss. The side effects for these products are not well known since there is little regulation.

The study does not prove that these supplements actually cause liver damage, but researchers say the association merits further investigation.
