A representative for Mell told the Windy City Times that the cancer is stage one and she is reviewing her treatment options.
Mell represents the 40th district on the city's northwest side. She is one of three openly gay members of the Illinois General Assembly.
On Thursday morning, Mell tweeted, "I feel good and blessed... Doctors caught it very early... And i am surrounded by great people... A loving wife... And a strong faith."
