Trooper struck helping stranded motorist on I-94

June 20, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Porter County-Indiana State Police Master Trooper Jeff Council was swiped by the car around 1 a.m. Wednesday. He was not seriously hurt.

Officials say his police car and the disabled car were on the shoulder of the interstate and the squad's emergency lights were on when a vehicle drive by Nonna Warda, 59, of Chicago, struck Council. Police say she also hit his Dodge Charger, bending the driver's door and shattering the window. The mirror from Warda's van was found inside Trooper Council's car, officials said.

Warda told police she didn't see the trooper and was cited for Failure to Yield.

Trooper Council was treated and released from a LaPorte, Ind., hospital.
