Tuesday night, trustees approved an agreement with the state to widen a portion of Willow Road from two lanes to four.
Crews will extend a two-mile stretch between Waukegan Road and the Edens Expressway.
Northfield initially opposed the project, citing safety concerns, but project supporters say rush-hour traffic causes bottlenecks and the road needs to be wider.
Construction could begin as early as next spring.
