A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association followed more than 3,000 people over 10 years. It measured things like their memory, coordination, dexterity and the ability to concentrate.
At the start of the study, those who already had diabetes had slightly lower cognitive ability than those who did not have the disease. But, nine years later, the gap in cognitive test scores had widened significantly between those with and without diabetes.
