Cook County hiring freeze in effect

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle is ordering a hiring freeze involving some unfilled county jobs as she unveils her new budget plan.

The county is facing a $267 million budget gap for the next fiscal year. That's because of the planned cut in the sales tax rate and a drop in revenue in the county healthcare system.

The overall budget gap is smaller than it has been the last couple of years.
