Teaching Self-Defense in India

Daily Herald Staff Writer Elena Ferrarin writes about Belle Staurowsky, a woman from Oakwood Hills in McHenry County, who took her love for martial arts to India.

Staurowsky takes several weeks at a time away from work to teach girls and young women who are victims of, or at risk for, human trafficking how to defend themselves.

In the process, she gives them a boost of self-esteem. Her one-woman organization, Green Tara, is named for the Buddah figure that represents enlightenment and action.
