Pastor accuses Glencoe police of race profiling

July 7, 2012 (GLENCOE, Ill.)

The Rev. Dr. Michael James claims on Saturday, June 30, he was ticketed for riding his bike through a construction zone.

James says a white female officer "aggressively" approached him near Sheridan Road and Hogarth Lane and issued him a $25 ticket.

James said he later noticed at least six other bicyclist -- all of whom were white -- cross the same intersection in front of the same officer. But none of them were ticketed.

James said when he tried to file a complaint, he was given the run-around by police.

"There is no way the police chief or the officer can try and fix this up," James said. "This is wrong and I have been bruised by this and I demand justice."

The Glencoe Department of Public Safety released a statement saying inpart, "Officers have issued dozens of citations to motorists and bicyclist that have jeporadized safety by driving through construction zones over the past few weeks.

"The department has a zero tolerance for any form of biased based enforcement."
