These health experts sent a petition to the Food and Drug Administration urging the government to revise the prescription label for opiod painkillers.
The FDA is being asked to prohibit the drugs for moderate use and add a maximum daily dose limit, and the petition asks that the drugs only be prescribed for up to 90 days unless they are for cancer related pain.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says overdose from prescription drugs is not the lead cause of accidental death in the country.
